Leaky Duct Tests/ Pressurization/ Duct Blast
The home's air distribution system; the equipment, ducting, boots, take-offs, etc. are isolated. A variable speed fan pressurizes the system from the return grille to the each and every supply register. This simulates the same path air would take from the time it leaves the home until it comes back out.

Air Distribution System(s) Inspections
The home's air distribution system; the equipment, ducting, boots, take-offs, etc. are inspected for leakage, installation standards, and the interior of the duct system is checked for dust, dirt, and other stains. The unit's efficiency is measured. The air distribution systems return leakage is checked. The A variable speed fan pressurizes the system from the return grille to the each and every supply register. This simulates the same path air would take from the time it leaves the home until it comes back out.

Whole House Tests

Inflotrometer - Leaky House Test
The home is depressurized. The amount of air removed from the home will tell how tight it was constructed. If the home were sealed tight like a rubber balloon then it would require very little air to reach the depressurization point. The accepted standard is 1CFM50/sqare foot. If a home were 2,750sq. ft. then it should have no more than 2,750CFM50 infiltration.

Home's Heating and Cooling Requirement Calculations
The home's various building components are modeled in a computer simulation. The number and size of windows, homes area, ceiling height, occupants, appliances, orientation, insulation and many other factors are consideredand assessed to determine the size of the heating and cooling system.

Duct Design
After the unit's size is determined it's capacity is distributed through out the home. A large room with large windows and skylights which capture the evening sun will need more capacity than the interior hall powder room. We design an air distribution system that will ensure +/-3° through out the home.

IAQ Survey
We assess the home's equipment capacity, air filtration, limited home leakage factors, and air distribution system.

Model: The R-22 Phase Out
R-22 PHASE OUT

R-22, along with several other chemicals, has been shown to deplete the ozone layer, which protects us from harmful UV radiation. In 1990, the United States worked with the global community to protect the environment by phasing out the supply and use of these ozone depleting compounds. The phase out started in 1996 with CFCs and it will be complete by 2020 for HCFC R-22 that is used in air-conditioning and refrigeration. The phase out is being enforced via an EPA program (under the terms of the Clean Air Act) that issues production and consumption rights. One right equals one kilogram of R-22 supply. The EPA will limit the amount of R-22 that is available for use in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment by lowering the amount of R-22 consumption rights over time.

RECENT CHANGES

At the 20th Anniversary meeting of the Montreal Protocol, the U.S., along with other signatory nations, agreed to accelerate the phase out of HCFCs by lowering the 2010 limit by an additional 10%.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO CONTRACTORS AND CONSUMERS

This accelerated phase out decision impacts all HCFCs and R-22 is by far the most widely used HCFC in the market today.

WHAT'S NEXT

With respect to the availability of HCFCs in the United States, on an R-22 basis the accelerated phase out decision will remove an additional 60 million pounds of supply in 2010 and the total supply cap will be reduced by 61% from today's levels.

The next regulatory milestone is expected to occur in 2008 when the EPA announces its plans for the 2010 through 2014 allocation of R-22 consumption rights. The EPA may chose to allocate less than all available rights for the 2010 through 2014 period further reducing supply.

About Marke's Heating & Air

Marke's was formed in 1967 under the name of Marke's Heating and Air Conditioning Company. The service area was limited to the Hilton Head Island, SC area.

In 1971, Jack Davis became the first full-time employee at Marke's Heating and Air Conditioning Company. After years as a service technician, Jack became the administrator for the company.

In 1972, Marke's Heating and Air Conditioning became incorporated as Marke's Inc.

In 1974, Marke's had grown to 16 employees while concentrating on residential HVAC service, installations, and commercial refrigeration service work.

In 2007, Mr. Tim Ferguson was appointed President of Marke's Inc, after being employed for 18 years as a technician and service manager. Marke's is a family business with Mr. Ferguson being the son-in-law of founder, Jack Davis.

Where We Are

Marke's Heating & Air is located in Hilton Head, South Carolina, just 95 miles south of historic Charleston, South Carolina and 45 minutes north of Savannah, Georgia, Hilton Head Island boasts being the second largest island off the Eastern Coast, with 12 miles of wide sandy beaches. It is shaped like a foot, with the "North End" being the ankle, "Mid-Island", which faces the Atlantic Ocean, being the heel and sole, and the "South End" being the toe.

The average temperature on Hilton Head Island is 71 degrees Farenheit, a semi-tropical climate which offers vacationers a year-round resort. Average temperatures range from the low 60's in the cool season to the mid 80's-90's in the summer.

There's always something to do on Hilton Head Island. If you're a golfer, there's 23 championship courses to choose from. Play tennis? Take your pick from over 200 tennis courts. Prefer watersports? Try a dolphin cruise, deep sea fishing, canoeing, windsurfing, sailboating or just plain ol' surf casting.

With trails running along most of the island, often parallel with Highway 278, bicycling is a popular activity. For the shopper, there's certainly no lack of outlet malls, department stores and shopping plazas. And if you like to eat, you'll find nearly every type of cuisine imaginable at many of the fine restaurants on Hilton Head Island.

And don't forget, there's also horseback riding, eco-tours, dinner cruises, & birdwatching ....so much to do, so little time!

What is "defrost" on my heat pump?
In the normal course of making heat your heat-pump gets cold and WILL make ice or liquid water depending on outdoor temperature and humidity. The textbooks all say that most ice production is produced at 40 degrees F. This will vary with actual humidity, temperature, rain, fog, or even snow.
To get rid of this ice, most heat-pumps have a defrost system. This system uses mechanical devises to detect that the coils have become stopped up with ice.
The way the system is designed to work is every 30, 60 or 90 minutes the control board will send a signal to begin the defrost cycle. This will cause the system to reverse. (Loud ?WHOOSH? and begin making water or steam), shut off the outdoor fan, and turn on the electric heat.
A loud ?whoosh? sound accompanies this reverse to air conditioning mode
The ice is melts off the coils and when the temperature sensor is satisfied, or 10 minutes elapses if it is not satisfied or failed, the outdoor fan comes back on and blows the water vapor away and at the same time the unit is reversed back into heat mode.
If this function is not working your unit can and WILL become a solid block of ice to the point of stopping the outdoor fan and making the unit useless. This is also very hard on your compressor because no freon is feeding back to cool the compressor. Most units come from the factory with the time set at 90 minutes. I would recommend setting the time to 30 minutes in humid climates, 90 in dry climates.
What causes the ice: Your heat pump is basically an air conditioner run in reverse. In the winter, in the defrost mode, the unit sending hot refrigerant inside and cold refrigerant outside. The cold refrigerant causes the air to frost and freeze on the unit much sooner. An accumulation of frost can look like snow or ice.

What is emergency heat?
Emergency heat is used when the outdoor unit or heatpup fails. The emergency heat uses the electric heat until you can call Marke's (681-2350) to come out and reapir your heat pump. The elecrtric heat is activated, usully automatically, and can usually keep your home warm through most winter conditions.

What is electric heat - strip heat - auxillary heat? And why do I need it?
Under normal operating conditions, the auxiliary heat is brought on automatically by the thermostat when the indoor temperature drops during heat pump operation. There are also times during cold wet weather that the outdoor coil may ice up and your heat pump will go into a defrost cycle. This is nothing more than reversing the process back to cooling mode. Cooling mode makes the outdoor coil hot and melts any ice. The defrost cycle should only last a few minutes and then return to heating mode. During the defrost cycle, your comfort system is in cooling mode and the supply air is cool. To offset this cool air, the auxiliary heat will be energized during defrost. A mist or fog may be visible during defrost.

What is Super Comfort Heat?
Super Comfort Heat mode occurs between 12?F and 40?F outdoor ambient temperature, during which airflow is further reduced, therefore increasing the supply air temperature. The benefits regarding comfort are very noticeable at this point. Further, with conventional heat pumps, comfort is most at risk at these ambient temperatures. This is due to the fact that the supply air temperature is typically enough to satisfy the thermostat, but not necessarily warm enough for the occupants to "feel" warm.

What is a heat pump?
The heat pump is an air conditioner that reverses the process of removing heat from the inside of the house in summer to absorbing the heat from outside air and moving it inside in winter. It is effective by itself down to temperatures around 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. At that point either a gas furnace or an air handler with supplemental electric heat will kick in and help heat your home. The Auxiliary Heat light on your thermostat will light. The heat pump will continue to operate during electric auxiliary heat. It will shut off when a gas furnace is energized. Emergency heat is a manual override option in the event your heat pump needs service.

How often should I change filters?
It depends. The manufacturer of your filter may recommend changing the once a month, once a quarter, or even once a year. It also depends on your lifestyle. A single person who is very neat and tidy may not need to change their filter as often as a large family with in-home pets living in a rural area.
